✅ New EU Trailer Rules: What UK Drivers Need to Know
If you’re planning to take your UK-registered car transporter or race trailer across to Europe, you need to be aware that since 26th August 2025, new rules now apply. Here’s a quick, easy-to-follow guide for Eco-Trailer owners and anyone towing vehicles abroad.
🔹 1. You now need to register your trailer
Any trailer over 750 kg gross weight must now be registered with the DVLA before travelling in most EU countries.
➡️ Register online at: gov.uk/trailer-registration
🔹 2. You’ll get a trailer registration certificate
Once registered, you’ll receive a Trailer Registration Certificate and a unique registration number.
Keep the certificate with you when travelling – border officials may ask to see it.
🔹 3. You must display a separate trailer plate
Your trailer now needs its own number plate, showing the new trailer registration number (not your car’s).
Make sure the plate is clearly visible and fitted in accordance with UK plate regulations.
🔹 4. Non-compliance risks fines or border delays
Unregistered trailers can be refused entry or fined up to €1,000 in some EU countries.
Don’t risk being turned away at the ferry terminal!
🔹 5. Check which countries it applies to
The rule applies to most of Europe, except Ireland, Spain, Cyprus, and Malta.
However, you’ll still need registration if your journey passes through other EU countries en route.
Eco-Trailer tip:
If you own or operate a trailer for motorsport, vintage cars, or specialist transport, make sure it’s compliant before you set off. Eco-Trailer models are already designed with dedicated space for EU-compliant registration plates and easy access for inspection — helping you stay road-legal wherever your next event takes you.
