What are trailer marker lights?
Trailer marker lights—often referred to as clearance or side marker lights—are small lamps positioned along the sides, and sometimes at the front and rear, of a trailer. Their purpose is to make the trailer’s full width and height visible, helping other road users to clearly see its outline. These lights are an important safety feature, particularly in poor visibility or when the trailer is wider than the vehicle towing it.
Are trailer marker lights required by law?
All trailers are legally required to have two red rear sidelights, two red brake lights, an illuminated number plate, amber indicators that flash between 60 and 120 times per minute, and two triangular red reflectors at the back. Trailers wider than 1.3 metres must also be fitted with at least one red rear fog light.
Trailers manufactured after 30th September 1990 must include front reflectors. Additionally, if the trailer is over 1.6 metres wide, it must also be equipped with front marker lights.
Any trailer with a gross weight exceeding 750kg—meaning it must be fitted with brakes—should have a reversing light positioned on the left-hand side. For trailers longer than 6 metres, two reversing lights are required, one on each side.
