What does LED stand for in LED lights?

LED stands for ‘Light Emitting Diode’. An LED is an electronic component made from a semiconductor that produces light when an electric current passes through it. As the current flows, electrons within the material combine with gaps known as electron holes, releasing energy as light particles called photons. The colour of the light depends on how much energy is needed for the electrons to move across the semiconductor’s band gap. To create white light, either a combination of different semiconductors is used, or a layer of phosphorescent material is added to the LED to convert the emitted light.

Why are LEDs better than filament bulbs?

LEDs are superior to traditional bulbs as they are more energy efficient, have a longer lifespan and carry a reduced environmental impact.

In terms of their lifespan, they can last up to 25 times longer than filament bulbs – fewer replacements, less waste, and much cheaper in the long term.

How are LEDS better for the environment?

Unlike many filament bulbs, LEDs do not contain mercury. This means that when opting for LED trailer lighting, you can be safe in the knowledge that this toxic substance is not used. Additionally, their lower power consumption means that your overall carbon footprint is vastly reduced.
