Can you tow with a hitch lock?
Towing a vehicle with a hitch lock still attached is generally discouraged and could be unsafe. Although there’s no specific UK law against it, hitch locks are intended for use only when a trailer or caravan is parked—not during transit.
Hitch locks interfere with safe towing in various ways such as preventing quick detachment of the trailer in an emergency, or causing damage to the vehicles bumper while turning.
How do hitch locks work?
Hitch locks are designed to either keep a trailer securely attached to a vehicle or stop unauthorised connections. They work by blocking the hitch handle from lifting or the tow ball from being inserted, usually using a robust metal pin or cover that locks firmly over the coupling mechanism.
