What is the maximum trailer weight you can tow without brakes?
In the UK if your trailer has no braking system, the Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) must not exceed 750kg.
Additionally an unbraked trailer must not weigh more than half of the ‘kerb weight’ of the towing vehicle. Kerb weight is a vehicles weight which includes all standard equipment, all necessary fluids (oil, coolant, brake fluid etc), a full tank of fuel, but no driver, passengers or cargo.
What is the penalty in the UK for driving an unbraked trailer which is over 750kg?
For a trailer which is only slightly overweight, you’re looking at a Fixed Penalty Notice, which equates to a £100 fine and 3 penalty points on your licence. The police may issue a prohibition, meaning you cannot continue your journey until the trailer is compliant.
If police are suspicious that your trailer is overweight, they may direct you to a public weighbridge or they may use portable weigh pads to check your trailer at the roadside.
